Samudra Manthan: Churning of the Milky Ocean

Group Dance: 90 minutes

VSPA’s first operatic work, entitled “Samudra Manthan,” was specially commissioned by Vishwa Shanthi. It was written and the music composed by the Chennai-based poet and musicologist P.R. Venkatasubramanian, sung by Guru V. Krishnamoorthi, and choreographed by Artistic Director Shreelata Suresh. It was performed by her and senior company dancers in elaborate costumes and roles.

The demi-Gods (Devas) and Demons (Asuras) collaborate to churn the Milk Ocean to extract the Nectar of Immortality (Amrita). Unlike typical Indian dance performances, the dance-drama format brings together more characters, stories, colors, and costumes, making it broadly appealing to all ages and cultures.
